Oregon MESA Teams rank high at USA National Engineering Design Competition

Portland, OR– For the second year in a row, Oregon MESA’s (Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Achievement) teams placed near the top in the MESA National Engineering Design Competition. The middle school team from Ockley Green School placed second overall, and the high school team from Franklin High School placed third overall in the annual competition that was held in Denver, Colorado from June 24-26, 2010.

The MESA National Engineering Design Competition is an opportunity for MESA USA states to showcase their best and brightest in science, technology engineering and science.  “These students represent the best of the 27,296 middle and high school students in MESA,” said Oscar Porter, Executive Director of MESA USA.

In order to get to this prestigious event, middle and high school student teams built windmills, conducted research and presented their findings at local state qualifying MESA Day competitions. Oregon’s team competed at MESA Day, held at Portland State University, on May 14, 2010.  With the support of The Lemelson Foundation and Intel, Ockley Green School and Franklin High School students represented Oregon MESA at the MESA USA National Design Competition in Denver, Colorado.  The competition took place June 24-26.
