Enriching the lives of Oregonians through nonprofit leadership is the central mission of the Nonprofit Association of Oregon (NAO). The organization advocates for charitable nonprofits of all sizes and purposes at the local, state, and national levels.

NAO serves its members by providing resources, research, training, and guidance to help Oregon’s nonprofits thrive. They believe in elevating the state’s organizations through:

  • Public policy work
  • Convening
  • Capacity building
  • Disseminating nonprofit standard of excellence
  • Conducting thought leadership through research and polling

The association had its beginnings in 1977 to provide technical assistance to nonprofits meeting the state’s social and cultural service needs. In nearly five decades, as the number of Oregon public benefit nonprofits evolved and grew from 639 to more than 20,000, so did NAO. Today, the organization is informed by its Theory of Change, a program that creates a culture of accountability, learning, and evolution of services for nonprofits.

NAO is committed to engaging diverse perspectives and promoting inclusiveness within its own organization, and sharing lessons learned with its membership and the broader nonprofit community as change agents for a more just and equitable Oregon.
