Rocky Mountain Institute

The Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) is an independent nonprofit working to accelerate the clean energy transition and ensure a zero-carbon future for all. It seeks to scale transformative change in the global energy system by reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% by 2030.

Over its 35-year history, RMI has become a trusted thought leader in energy transformation. The organization believes that climate change can be solved, and that the issue provides a prime economic opportunity for current and future generations. It focuses on addressing energy production and energy use, which represents 70% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

RMI is one of The Lemelson Foundation’s first Climate Action Initiative grantees. The Foundation’s grant funding supports the acceleration of industrial decarbonization by sourcing, selecting, supporting, and scaling 15 to 30 promising tech startups through RMI’s Third Derivative (D3) and Climate-Aligned Industries (CAI) programs, focusing on decarbonizing three heavy industries: cement and concrete, petrochemicals, and steel.
