RMI, founded as Rocky Mountain Institute, is a global, independent nonprofit with more than 700 experts committed to accelerating a global shift to clean energy. For over 40 years, RMI has driven market-based solutions to encourage investment that helps deploy clean technologies, develop skilled workers, mobilize finance, and improve energy efficiency by reducing waste and pollution.
The organization focuses on the sectors and regions that matter most, helping scale innovative solutions across electricity, transportation, buildings, and heavy industry. The institute’s work shows that the energy transition is happening faster than many realize, as the growth of clean energy technologies accelerates around the world.
RMI is one of the first grantees of The Lemelson Foundation’s Climate Action Initiative. With support from The Lemelson Foundation, RMI is sourcing, supporting, and scaling 31 promising startups working to decarbonize critical heavy industries: chemicals, steel, and cement. This work is led through Third Derivative, RMI’s global climate tech accelerator, which connects climate innovators with the resources, partnerships, and capital needed to drive industrial transformation at scale.
“RMI’s Third Derivative is a powerful engine for climate innovation, directly addressing the formidable challenge of decarbonizing heavy industry,” shares Joel Clement, Director of The Lemelson Foundation’s Climate Action Initiative. “By connecting and supporting these crucial startups, RMI is effectively accelerating the development and deployment of solutions that will reshape our industrial future. This work demonstrates the vital role of strategic partnerships in translating ingenuity into tangible, large-scale climate impact.”
