VertueLab

VertueLab is a nonprofit that supports climate tech entrepreneurs and cleantech startups in the Pacific Northwest that might otherwise have difficulty accessing traditional sources of capital through direct, program-related investments and accelerator programs. Founded in 2007 as Oregon BEST, it developed from supporting emerging climate-focused companies in Oregon to investing in climate innovation across the region.
VertueLab research has identified several opportunities and challenges in the region’s climate tech sector, including:
- funding gaps for women and BIPOC entrepreneurs
- the importance of climate initiatives led by Tribal communities
- addressing climate resilience
- recommendations for a robust clean energy ecosystem
Its Climate Impact Fund received financial support from The Lemelson Foundation and other funders to invest in early-stage companies working to reduce emissions or convert carbon into useful projects. To date, it has invested in 14 startups that have received $23.4 million in follow-on funding, with the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 6.4 gigatons.
Its Just Future Climate Labs initiative tests and builds programs to support historically underserved entrepreneurs and communities as part of an equitable and just climate tech transition.

“The Pacific Northwest, with its stunning landscapes and diverse communities, stands at a critical crossroads in addressing the impacts of the climate crisis,” says Aina Abiodun, President of VertueLab. “As we work together to make this region a leader in transitioning to an equitable climate tech economy, it’s clear that inclusive and innovative solutions are essential.”
